What's It With Our Women? - Part I

What's it with our women anyway? I've been away from a while and when I return the women seem to be having with our royal Habsbourgeois features. What is going on? Even the Queen of England herself seems to be displaying some insecurities about this, and she is quite the pretty lady too. This is too much for me to bear. I need to blog about this.

When I was researching the Wurttemberg related posts, I was listening to Jill Scott's music, and went about to look for some contemporary pictures of Black women with widow's peaks, and funnily enough someone had made a video of this number featuring a woman with a widow's peak. Honest, I am not making this up.

Here is an example of a painting that reinforces my belief that the black servants in a number of the paintings are not actual servants but heraldic symbols. Egmond himself has changed his viewpoint to the belief some of the images even if symbolic actually allude to contemporary persons or historical personalities of that era, ie people with such complexions. For my part I have seen enough to convince me of that.

The Road to Württemberg

This is the painting which led me to Fleur. It features a pretty servant in the painting of Friedrich Ludwig, Crown Prince of Württemberg and his wife Henriette Marie of Brandenburg-Schwedt, 1716, by Antoine Pesne (1683-1757). I don't know what attracted my attention to Fleur. I was trying to look it up for some more background info which would explain the servant and found myself looking at picture for Fleur. Do I have a thing for brunettes, or is just my imagination?

Not One Black Boy, but Two!!

I don't think this painting leaves any doubt about its intent. A black boy holding up a crown beneath what looks like the outstretched leg of the King's mistress, and 'pointing through the hole' so to speak. Add a second black boy to the mix, spying on from behind the pillar, and it becomes all too much for the delicate sensibilities of white folks to bear.

On Saturnine Complexions

First of all he had an abnormal darkness of complexion, a truly saturnine tint. This darkness was the subject of comment from the first. His mother wrote jokingly to her sister-in-law that she had give birth to a black baby and to a friend in France that 'he was so dark that she was ashamed of him'. Show would send his portrait 'as soon as he is a littler fairer'. But Charles never did become fairer. Later the sobriquet 'the Black Boy' would be used, still commemorated in English inn signs.
